My long-time editor, Greg West, says if I call him “the magician” one more time he’s going to bop me one. Oh all right then. Greg West is an alchemist. Countless times I've seen him take a motley collection of images and spin them into thrilling, cinematic gold. He's also blessed with a painter’s eye which sees things mere mortals cannot see. He and I can look at the same shot of somebody’s face. I see a face. You know: a nose, eyebrows, lips, etc. He sees marvellous, mysterious potential and of course when he cuts it into the film in the right spot it's obvious...even to me. My long-time main cameraman John Westheuser is gifted at many things but especially in cinema verite situations. He can plunge into an unfolding crisis (flanked by his crackerjack sound recordist Doug Kaye) and somehow capture almost everything that happens. Associate Producer Pam Danter who did most of the research has an unerring sense of what makes a great story, and who makes a great documentary subject -- and the ability to charm them into participating. Deborah Parks, my wonderful co-producer, has simply saved my bottom oh about 800 times and still counting. Rage Against the Darkness was the idea of Marie Natanson, Hilary Armstrong and Charlotte Odele of CBC and they’ve been wonderfully supportive as has been Jerry McIntosh who was key in making the trilogy happen.
