KASTNER BIO (Producer/Director/Writer)
John Kastner has won four Emmys—more than anyone else in the history of Canadian television—for his documentaries Four Women, Fighting Back, The Lifer and the Lady, about a convicted killer’s romance with a middle-class woman, and Life with Murder, about the agonizing choice two parents must make after their son murders their daughter. Kastner has also won more than 75 international awards for his films, which include Monster in the Family and Rage Against the Darkness. He was honoured by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television with the Academy Achievement Award in 2007 and by Hot Docs with a retrospective of his work in 2012. In his latest film, Out of Mind, Out of Sight, Kastner returns to the Brockville Mental Health Centre—the site of his acclaimed 2013 film, NCR: Not Criminally Responsible, which follows the story of a violent patient released into the community, much to the alarm of his victim and her family—to examine the treatment process for offenders suffering from mental illness.
